Cereal manufacturer FutureLife and the financial division of messaging app WeChat will team up to make e-commerce possible via a TV screen.

A FutureLife advert containing a QR code will be aired on DSTV next month.

To purchase, users will have to open their WeChat wallet and scan the QR code on the television, make a purchase, and have the cereal delivered to their door free of charge.

The Chinese messaging app launched its eWallet late last year to allow it to stand out in the crowded messaging space and enter the mobile finance game.

To get people to use WeChat's digital wallet, the app has been running a series of campaigns in which it gives users cash back when they use it.

The FutureLife promotion will cost R150 for five breakfast products and users will get R50 back in their WeChat wallets.

That cash can be used again at participating outlets, to buy airtime or electricity within the app, or draw out at any Standard Bank ATM.

WeChat Africa CEO Brett Loubser says innovations like making TV an e-commerce channel will make life easier for customers, especially in Africa where it is mobile-first.

The promotion will start today and run till 9 October.
