Data traffic solution eases indoor congestion

The experience of mobile data services for indoor end-users is constantly evolving, placing extreme pressure on the network operators to improve the user experience.

This is according to Simon Liang, manager of Huawei's Indoor Connected Solution (ICS), who said as mobile traffic increases, the indoor service is becoming complicated.

Speaking at a media roundtable at Huawei Analyst Summit 2016, in Shenzhen, China, Liang said more than 70% of data traffic is generated indoors.

Improving the indoor user experience is key to seizing the high ground on value data traffic, he stated.

"Fast-developing video and over-the-top services require enhanced indoor networks. The traditional indoor coverage solution does not support high capacity, high density, multiple services that facilitate an enhanced user experience," Liang explained.

To assist operators to improve the user's mobile service experience, Huawei has unveiled the ICS.

Previously known as the In-Building Solution, ICS is a solution for indoor scenario planning, while for the network operators the model helps achieve value-added services and promotes new business growth, according to Huawei.

The solution also accelerates digital transformation by helping operators explore opportunities for increased revenue by providing value-added services. These include a heat map, push messages, smart parking and indoor navigation inside a shopping mall, airport or large venue.

In China, Huawei worked with the major operators to deploy ICS, while the solution was also trialled at this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain.

At MWC, Huawei worked with Vodafone to achieve better mobile service for visitors in the exhibition hall and allowed guests to enjoy mobile data services.

This partnership resulted in doubled throughput when compared to 2015, doubled the number of customers and enabled nine times the amount of data traffic.

According to Liang, the indoor solution is the most typical scenario for Internet of things integration, which will require higher demand from an indoor level.
