The African National Congress' (ANC's) Gauteng leadership is considering scrapping the e-toll system as the party looks to garner public support in the build-up to the 2016 municipal elections.

This is according to reports in papers this morning.

The Sunday Times and City Press reported behind-the-scenes discussions were taking place at the ANC's Gauteng provincial conference, including looking at ways to scrap e-tolls.

The system has been met with strong public resistance from the province's motorists, and a review panel set up by premier David Makhura is taking submissions, many of which have called for it to be scrapped.

According to the City Press, the ANC's executive in Gauteng wants to take a resolution to its leadership at its Luthuli House headquarters and then to its national general council next year to call for a complete review of e-tolling.

Paul Mashatile, the ANC's Gauteng provincial chairman, said recommendations of the review panel should be implemented. "We cannot close our eyes in Gauteng when our people have problems," he told the party's provincial conference.

He said the SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) does not run the country and the agency "must know their place".

Meanwhile, the Sunday Times noted a final decision on the ANC's position on e-tolls would be announced later today.
