Attempts to access Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp proved futile for some users on Wednesday, as the world's biggest social media platform and its family of apps experienced a global outage.

Although Facebook did not provide details on the cause of the outage, the social media platform took to Twitter to acknowledge the issue.

It tweeted: "We're aware that some people are having trouble uploading or sending images, videos and other files on our apps. We're sorry for the trouble and are working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible."

Referencing outage tracking website Downdetector.com, Reuters has reported that more than 14 000 users reported issues with Instagram, while more than 7 500 and 1 600 users reported issues with Facebook and WhatsApp.

This is the second time in recent months that Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have experienced a blackout, with the latest one reported in April.
