New Adabas versions now available for IBM mainframes, Unix, Linux and Windows

Johannesburg, 11 Feb 2003

Software AG has announced the availability of new mainframe, Unix, Windows and Linux versions of its high-performance database Adabas, offering significantly enhanced performance, reliability and consolidated 24x7 availability.

Concurrently, it has unveiled SQL Server 5 Adabas, a completely new implementation for SQL access to Adabas, delivering revamped interfaces for ODBC and JDBC as well as simplified Adabas-SQL integration.

The Adabas product portfolio is marketed and sold locally by Dimension Data, which is supported by Software AG's office in South Africa.

Joe Curran, Manager, Software AG SA, says the new Adabas Version 7.4 marks the culmination of a major reprogramming of this high-end database over the last three years, aimed at boosting speed, scalability and availability.

These benefits are immediately available to users of 64-bit architectured IBM mainframes running OS/390 and z/OS. Variants for the BS2000, VSE and VM mainframe platforms will be released in the next few months.

"Software AG's development efforts," Curran remarks, "focused primarily on increasing performance and reliability and providing consolidated 24x7 availability. Within the IBM environment, the new technology supports data backup and recovery during ongoing operations as well as longer-running transactions with more change accesses than ever before. Support for external backup systems has been extended, and as usual, read-only access is available throughout back-up operations."

Within the open-systems environment, the new version 3.2 of Adabas supports Windows, Unix and Linux (RedHat und SuSE). Here too, the developers prioritised flexibility, reliability, ease of maintenance and data backup and recovery.

"Adabas 3.2 supports cross-system FTP data exchange between Unix, Windows, mainframe and other platforms," Curran notes. "And, because Adabas 3.2 can read or write multiple data records in parallel, backup and data recovery times are dramatically cut. As with the mainframe variant, data in Adabas 3.2 is compatible with external backup systems."

The simultaneously released SQL Server 5 Adabas add-on is intended for Adabas Version 7.4 users, and supports IBM's OS/390 and z/OS mainframe operating systems. A variant for the Windows and Sun Solaris platforms is scheduled for Q2 2003, and versions for the mainframe platforms BS2000, VSE, Unix and Linux will follow at a later date.
