The Universal Services and Access Agency of SA (USAASA) is looking for a CEO as a matter of urgency, and will place advertisements in the Sunday papers this weekend.

"We are looking for a very strong manager, because the work that USAASA needs to do to fulfil its new mandate, as defined by the Electronic Communications Act, is national," says chairman Cassandra Gabriel.

In addition to fulfilling its mandate, which includes the provision and promotion of universal service in the telecoms and broadcasting sectors, USAASA also needs to establish a closer working relationship with ICT sector, Gabriel says.

"It's quite an eventful time for USAASA."

Gabriel adds that USAASA was previously a small, sidelined organisation that had not played its role to the fullest, and the board is looking for someone who will lead it to fulfil its role more effectively.

Musical chairs

Consistent leadership at USAASA has been a challenge, with three people filling the post of CEO/acting CEO in less than a year.

Following former CEO Sam Gulube's departure in April, COO Motlatso Ramadiba was appointed as acting CEO.

Raymond Ncqobo, a former chief director with the Department of Trade and Industry, was appointed CEO on 1 December, Gabriel confirms. Ncqobo filled the post for two months before resigning for personal reasons, she adds.

Gabriel will be acting CEO while the search for a suitable candidate is under way. The closing date for applications is 19 February.
