Serve as a virtual CIO, not an IT expert

Be a strategist, as well as a solutions expert. Assess the business needs and recommend ideas, best practices and technical solutions that will address a client's short and long-term business goals. Here are a few ways to get started:

* Check the boxes on the SLA, communicate often and work to be proactive by anticipating clients' needs, as well as the changing dynamic of the workplace. When a current event or breach occurs that could ultimately affect clients, be the communicator, addressing the news head on and discussing next steps. Whether it is a weather-related issue, a new public policy or a cyber security threat, keeping clients informed is a top priority.

* Provide professional services on a personal level. Go the extra mile and find out what is important to them, and what their goals are both professionally and personally. Great business engagements require real relationships and meaningful results.
