First Fibroblast Injection Performed in SpinalCyte's Landmark Trial for Spinal Disc Regeneration
SpinalCyte, LLC, a Texas-based tissue engineering technology company focused on the regrowth of the spinal disc nucleus using human dermal fibroblasts, announced the first injection of fibroblasts for the regeneration of the spinal disc. CybroCell is the first dermal fibroblast product for treatment of degenerative disc disease. The procedure was completed in less than 15 minutes using a local anesthetic. The patient experienced no complications and was discharged within an hour.

The clinical trial will enroll 18 patients between the ages of 18 and 85. Each patient will be administered CybroCell alone, in combination with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), or saline only. SpinalCyte aims to show that using its off-the-shelf, allogeneic "prepackaged" cell therapy product, CybroCell will lead to a reduction in pain, improved function, and regeneration of damaged discs.
