Traditional construction equipment manufacturer, CAT, has introduced the latest in its range of rugged smartphones. The CAT S41 features a battery capable of powering other electronic devices.

The smartphone is now available to purchase in SA for the recommended retail price of R7 999.

It sports a rugged design with a textured rubber casing that does not require any extra covers to withstand drops. It is waterproof to depths of up to 2m for an hour, and is able to withstand thermal shocks.

The S41's 5-inch display can be viewed in bright sunlight, and the touch-screen can be controlled with wet fingers or while wearing gloves. The camera can also be used under water.

It is aimed at professionals who work in the building industry, utility workers and emergency first responders, or anyone who regularly takes part in outdoor recreational activities, such as hiking or fishing.

The CAT S41 has a 5 000mAh battery, which provides up to 44 days of standby time or up to 38 hours of 3G talk time. A new feature called 'battery share' lets users power other products or phones using a USB connector provided with the handset.

The feature is accessible through an app on the home screen. Users can also set a reserve battery level which means the phone will stop charging other devices when it reaches a certain level, ensuring the CAT S41 retains some charge.

"The CAT S41 is an uncompromised smartphone that's truly fit for the tough environments in which our customers use their phones," says Peter Stephens, CEO of Bullitt Group, global mobile licensee for Caterpillar.

"We've been careful to listen and build on what we know is most critical for them, resulting in the S41: a powerful, rugged smartphone with a huge, shareable battery that addresses these requirements head-on."

The phone runs on Android Nougat, and has 3GB RAM with 32GB internal memory with expandable storage. The rear camera is 13MP and the front 8MP.
