RDB Consulting, an ICT outsource and consulting company, has won a maintenance contract to support and monitor Airports Company South Africa's Oracle and SQL databases. As these business critical databases underpin Airports Company South Africa's operations, specialist support was a vital criterion.
Airports Company South Africa manages South Africa's 10 principal airports, which together handle more than 270 000 aircraft landings and 33 million passengers annually. Its non-aviation commercial services division, which consists of its retail, property, advertising and international activities, accounts for nearly half of its profit.
The contract, which commenced on 1 December 2009, sees RDB Consulting providing ongoing support and monitoring for over 100 Airports Company South Africa databases nationwide.
This includes one of the most critical systems, the airport operational database, which consists of the passenger and aircraft control system, as well as the aeronautical revenue of Airports Company South Africa. Other databases monitored and supported by RDB Consulting include those responsible for Airports Company South Africa's commercial services revenue.
Says Zack Adam, Manager of IT Operations, Airports Company South Africa: "Database monitoring and support have always been critical to Airports Company South Africa, but we have opted to enhance our resources by bringing RDB Consulting's expertise onboard. RDB Consulting will supplement our internal resources and ensure that best practices are sustained. This is vital considering the rapid growth in passenger traffic. And it will be particularly crucial during the 2010 World Cup, when our operations will deal with additional passengers and flights, and system downtime cannot be tolerated."
Airports Company South Africa invited a number of suppliers to tender for the contract. RDB Consulting's high level of specialisation in database services made the choice easy. Says Adam: "RDB Consulting is a preferred supplier and service provider, and we aim to create a working relationship with the company.”
Says Jaroslav Cerny, CEO of RDB Consulting: "Due to the complex nature of Airports Company South Africa's business, efficiency, reliability and uninterrupted operation is essential. In this environment, proactive database monitoring is vital, enabling the resolution of potential issues before they impact the smooth running of operations. By outsourcing their database service requirements to a database specialist, Airports Company South Africa can ensure that this highly critical part of their infrastructure is taken care of by experts."
