Bring on the visual bling and create rich, unforgettable e-learning content

The impact visual communication has on digital and e-learning, by Christine McKeown.

Johannesburg, 10 Apr 2018

In an age where an average person's attention span is about 8 seconds, it may be time to face the fact that the world around us has gone visual, and there is no going back...

Photos, infographics, memes, illustrations, and videos are just a few forms of visual content that are having a huge impact on the way people consume and interact with information and all of these visual assets will only continue to grow in importance over the next few years. Consumers are connecting to, searching for, watching, creating, downloading, and shopping for content more than ever, so when it comes to the ever-changing landscape of e-learning, how exactly are you enhancing your digital offering with visuals that create unforgettable learning experiences?

Research has shown that the retention of information is six times greater when presented in a visually stimulating manner. It's also been shown that as much as 83% of human learning occurs visually. Don't believe us? Without scrolling back up, try to remember the headline of this blog? Can you? Ok, something a little easier - what about the image at the top of the post? Can you remember the "Cat" image? Chances are pretty high that if you were able to remember anything at all, it was the image.

The secret to delivering lasting learning is really more a challenge of creativity than anything else. It's pretty pointless to berate the new millennium brain through repetition, but rather come up with creative images to associate with the things you want remembered. Humans are simply not built to remember numbers or text, but how lucky are we to be living in a time when this can easily be circumvented with a tiny bit of creativity.

So now we know that pictures have a tendency to get stuck in our heads, how do we apply it to our e-learning thinking? It's time to take the traditional training manual and give it an extreme makeover - Bring on the bling and make it a visually rich experience guaranteed to keep the eyes busy, the brain more alert and open the gateway directly to long-term memory. Bite-sized chunks of deliciously coherent information that will not only be consumed with relish, but will deliver a knockout blow straight to the back of the visual cortex - the holy grail of memory making.

So, in a nutshell, changing your thinking when it comes to e-learning is going to have a host of benefits, including:

* Learning efficacy - In the multi-lingual, multi-cultural landscape that is South Africa, the intelligent use of quality visuals ensures effective learning and satisfies all categories of learners. Immediate understanding is possible, and as facilitators, this is worth gold!
* The learning experience is enhanced by captivating visuals. Engaged learners are more likely to complete the course.
* Creating connections all the way! Because the difficulty of understanding the learning material is vastly reduced, learners are able to be more connected with those around them, as well as with the essence of the subject, helping them achieve optimal results.
* Visually rich e-learning can improve retention and appeal to a variety of learning styles. Difficult-to-explain skills and techniques can be illustrated clearly and effectively.

Today's audiences crave custom, quality visual content delivered with intent, as they help people process, understand, and retain more information faster.

Are you creating stunning visuals or including videos in your e-learning campaigns, because if you aren't, we're sure that we don't need to draw you a picture of where your training services are headed.
