East Asian game publisher Garena has announced plans to expand into the Sub-Saharan Africa market.

Garenais the developer of the team-based shooter game, Fire Fall, which was the most downloaded mobile game in 2020. The free-to-play game was also the winner of the inaugural Esports Mobile Game of the Year accolade at the The Esports Awards 2020.

Singapore-based Garena currently operates in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and Latin America. It released Fire Fall in 2011, and launched its online game and social platform Garena+ the same year.

The company says Free Fire has over 450 million registered users and over 50 million daily active players. In 2020, Free Fire recorded 266 million downloads globally and racked up 72 billion views on YouTube.

Earlier this month, Garena announced a partnership with Japanese anime house Kodansha, to bring one of the most popular anime series, Attack on Titan, to Free Fire. The Garena Free Fire Attack on Titan event is planned for March. “Free Fire players can soon battle in the style of one of the world’s most captivating modern dark fantasy anime – Attack on Titan. The series has captured the imagination of many worldwide with its unique and immersive narratives; we’re excited to bring this over into the world of Free Fire,” said Harold Teo, producer at Garena.

Free Fire can be downloaded from both Apple and Google Play stores.
