Despite initial hesitance about artificial intelligence (AI), organisations around the world are now discovering that AI offers them their best fighting chance of keeping up with rapidly evolving cyber crime.
This is according to Mariana Pereira, director of e-mail security products at Darktrace, who was speaking ahead of a webinar to be held in South Africa by Darktrace, in partnership with ITWeb.
“Over the years, there has been a lot of hype and hesitance around the notion of entrusting cyber security to AI,” she says. “But AI has made leaps and bounds in cyber security. Organisations quickly find, when they trial it, that it doesn’t replace humans and offers many advantages over traditional software solutions.”
She notes that because no two enterprises are exactly the same, there can be no one-size fits all solution to mitigate risk. “AI adapts and responds to each unique environment, going beyond just identifying known risks to detecting any anomalies.” This is particularly important in protecting the e-mail environment, which has been notoriously porous for years, she says.
“Darktrace uses AI to enable an ‘immune system’ cyber response – it learns to understand each environment and its patterns of communication and behaviour across silos, people and devices. So whatever your rule book is, AI understands what the normal digital flow of business looks like, spots anomalies and deploys digital antibodies. The fantastic thing about AI is that it learns on the job and you don’t have to programme it.”
Pereira says many organisations now treat AI as an additional team member, working alongside humans to combat cyber risk.
"We’ve seen that throwing humans at the cyber risk problem doesn’t scale, plus there is a skills shortage. AI can be a force multiplier,” she says.
