PaperGeni first in SA to offer BPA-free thermal paper

Johannesburg, 23 Feb 2012

From March 2012, selected products in the PaperGeni range of thermal paper rolls will no longer contain the chemical Bisphenol A (BPA).

“There is a fast-growing international market demand for greener, BPA-free thermal receipt paper, as it is perceived to be a safer alternative to regular BPA paper,” says Thorsten Schafer, divisional director of PaperGeni.

“In line with this international trend, and in consultation with some of our major clients, we will be the first major supplier in the country to provide BPA-free paper. At this stage, we estimate that PaperGeni will convert around 160 tons of standard BPA to BPA-free paper per month, over the next three months.”

Schafer says public awareness about BPA and its possible associated dangers has been rising. BPA is commonly found in plastics and thermal printer paper, and has been identified as a substance with potentially harmful side effects by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“For merchants who have concerns about the substance, BPA-free thermal paper is the viable alternative,” says Schafer. “PaperGeni will offer BPA-free receipt paper in both 55 and 48gsm at highly competitive prices and for all makes and models of terminal or POS printers. It will not cost our customers any more than the paper they are currently using, and works exactly like the paper it replaces.

“So plain or printed, if you care about the environment and the safety of your staff and customers, BPA-free thermal rolls from PaperGeni is the way to go.”

Schafer says PaperGeni is planning to convert all its major clients over to BPA-free paper over the coming year.
