Those eagerly awaiting the release of Instagram for Android are now able to sign up to be first to receive the new app.

In a specially created sign-up page, users can enter their e-mail addresses in order to receive a notification as soon as Instagram for Android becomes available.

Instagram is yet to announce when the app will be released, but earlier this month Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom briefly flashed the app on a Galaxy Nexus handset while on stage at the SXSW Conference. Systrom said the app wasn't quite ready for a full demo or walkthrough.

Instagram is a mobile application that allows users to capture images, apply a range of filters and post it for others to see, comment on and share. The app has built a social network around photo sharing through features such as user profiles and a news feed.

Instagram gained notoriety as an exclusively iOS app, and the Android release will be its first venture onto another platform.

The app currently has 27 million registered users, and the expansion to Android is expected to dramatically increase user numbers due to the sheer scope of devices that support the platform.
