Data visualisation specialist Terra Analytics has lowered its total cost of infrastructure ownership by 30%, while at the same time improving system reliability and uptime through a move to the Huawei Cloud.

Terra Analytics, a diversified group of companies that focus on innovation in decision-making by using spatial technologies with multidisciplinary capabilities, used to manage its IT infrastructures in local hosting data centres and on-premises environments. However, due to aged equipment and frequent load-shedding, it faced increased business continuity risks caused by hardware failures and power failures. The company lacked a monitoring portal and had low resource utilisation: with traditional virtualisation environment CPU utilisation lower than 15%.

In addition, Terra Analytics’ existing environment did not have the capacity to meet its future expansion needs, or its requirement to achieve full disaster recovery and failover services without an over-reliance on limited and skilled in-house specialists and physical infrastructure. The company’s IT engineers are mostly engaged in project delivery and application configuration and optimisation, limiting available capacity for IT hardware environment trouble-shooting and repair.

Terra Analytics made the decision to move all its applications to Huawei Cloud to enjoy the benefits of cloud technology. Huawei Cloud allocated a dedicated team to work with Terra Analytics' technical team to understand their legacy IT architecture and design the best practice cloud solution together. After several workshops with the Huawei Cloud team, a reliable, scalable and cost-efficient cloud solution was quickly validated through a proof of concept.

Huawei Cloud provides Terra with a reliable, scalable and on-demand environment with backup capacity and real-time monitoring console. The solution further provisions for Elastic Cloud Server and Elastic IP, Cloud Backup and Restore and Cloud Eye. Via the Server Migration Service (the migration tool) provided by Huawei Cloud, Terra is able to migrate on-premises VM or physical servers to the cloud online automatically, and switch over to cloud within two minutes.

Terra has achieved the ability to easily migrate legacy applications onto Huawei Cloud without the traditional concerns around computer set-up, storage and network infrastructures, and is able to scale down or up as required.

Its applications are now running reliably, which has saved the engineering teams significant time and frees up their capacity to focus on application configuration and optimisation for existing and new projects.

Importantly, with the help of Huawei Cloud Eye Service, the free and comprehensive monitoring platform on Huawei Cloud, Terra can now track CPU, memory and storage utilisation – both historically and in real-time, allowing it to optimise utilisation and reduce TCO by at least 30%.

"As we provide our clients with a software as a service (SaaS) product to enable them to undertake their digital transformation strategies for the various applications at Terra, we believe that Huawei Cloud is a reliable world-class cloud platform to help us to succeed in this goal,” said Willy Govender, CEO of Terra Analytics.
