In 1999, the University of Swaziland identified a need for a software system to replace its custom-built student information system and its personnel information system. Primary requirements for the new system were that it had to be:
* An integrated system;
* Secure, with the capability to specify access rights for users;
* Accessible from all three of the university`s campuses, with IP being the protocol of communication; and
* Driven from a graphical user interface.
ITS systems are used by the vast majority of tertiary institutions in SA, as well as the universities of Lesotho and Botswana. These two universities in particular have similar academic structures to the University of Swaziland, so that their decision to use ITS`s system was made considerably easier. At the time that the decision was made, version 12 had not been released, and it was resolved that implementation would be delayed until version 12 was fully available.
In November 2003, the university made its commitment to purchase the ITS system and implementation commenced in February 2004.
"The selection of the ITS solution underlines the fact that ITS remains the major supplier of administrative systems to the higher education sector in the southern African region. Systems have been implemented at institutions in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The University of Swaziland now receives front-line support with full backup from the Pretoria office in SA," said Derick Jordaan, CEO of ITS.
"The University of Swaziland aimed to register students on the new ITS Student Management System at the commencement of the 2005 academic year, beginning in August 2004. This target was successfully achieved and the Personnel Management System was also successfully installed," said Peet du Plessis, Implementation Project Manager.
