Simplifying a specialist’s language

By Elné Rall, UX Designer at Incasu

Pretoria, 02 Jun 2020

I work for specialists in the software development industry. The IT jargon thrown around in the office often flies over my head. Like most of you, I smile and nod. But honestly, who knows what’s going on?

No one has time for long words and even longer articles.

There seems to be a new word every few weeks that carry so much weight. So, I do a Web search on just one topic and end up scrolling through an endless explanation of even more complex terms and Web discussions. This makes an already long day of information-packed business meetings seem longer.

I realised as a designer that I have been trained in the ways of design and the accompanying terms. Those words roll through my mind and off from my tongue. This brings us to why Incasu Lessons seems like the perfect idea.

The Incasu Lessons take important terms which are often used with software development and turn them into a to-the-point visual.

The paragraphs are concise and sometimes are coupled with a few visual puns to simplify the concept further.

According to Nathan Shedroff, an Information Designer and professional strategist, “Information design addresses the organisation and presentation of data: its transformation into valuable meaningful information.”

And who doesn’t like colourful and quirky pictures, right?

With these images we are aiming to build up our audience’s understanding of jargon so that we can engage more effectively and have productive technical discussions with our clients and followers (and myself). In this way both parties benefit by speaking the same language and using industry buzzwords without exhausting Google or saying one too many ‘uhms’ in a meeting.

The Incasu Lessons started off with the ‘Basics of’ series, very simple. Over time we hope to cover most of the terms. We might even start to take requests. There is much more learning to do and exciting terms to investigate.
