SA innovators and AWS: recipe for success

SA’s innovators have embraced AWS to speed up innovation.

Johannesburg, 01 Sep 2020

South African organisations were among the world’s early adopters of AWS, and have used the head start they got as a result to develop world-class solutions.

This is according to AWS, which is currently conducting a survey on cloud adoption and trends in South Africa, and preparing to launch a series of cloud-focused webinars in partnership with ITWeb.

Zubin Chagpar: Head of MEA, AWS Public Sector Sales, says: “South African enterprises are among the most innovative in the world and this innovative DNA led South African enterprises to be among the early adopters of AWS when we launched the services back in 2004.”

Enterprises of varied sizes are using AWS to lower their operating costs, launch new business ideas and digitally transform their organisations to deliver enhanced services to customers.

Chagpar highlights one South African enterprise that is using AWS to transform its business – Mix Telematics, a global provider of fleet management, driver safety and vehicle tracking services and solutions. Its technologies allow owners to track their vehicles, collect real-time running data and run diagnostics to understand when maintenance is needed, which reduces vehicle downtime.

“Mix Telematics started working with AWS in 2015 and decided to go all-in, moving their full fleet and mobile asset management stack to AWS and shutting down their on-premises data centres over a period of 18 months. Because of AWS, Mix Telematics sped up innovation and increased system reliability, while reducing the time to get new ideas into production from months to minutes. The company uses AWS solutions for its operations in Ireland, Australia and the US, to support its base of almost one million subscribers,” he says.

AWS, in collaboration with ITWeb, will explore trends and opportunities to drive growth and innovation through cloud technology in a webinar to be held on Thursday, 3 September. For more information, and to register for this event, click here.
