UK universities get $40m research boost from Intel

Computer giant Intel has revealed a five-year collaboration with two UK universities to use smart technology to tackle urban issues like energy supply and environmental problems, Energy Efficiency News reports.

The move is part of a $40 million investment programme in the Intel Collaborative Research Institute (ICRI), which brings together experts from academia and industry to work together on future technologies.

Woman In Technology says the programme will focus on sustainable connected cities in the UK, which will address the social, economic and environmental problems of cities with computing technology.

"Forming a multidisciplinary community of Intel, faculty and graduate student researchers from around the world will lead to fundamental breakthroughs in some of the most difficult and vexing areas of computing technology," commented Justin Rattner, CTO at Intel.

Imperial College and University College London will work with Intel on the project, which will include similar research centres in Germany and Israel, BCS notes.

"The new Intel Collaborative Research Institute programme underscores our commitment to establishing and funding collaborative university research to fuel global innovation in key areas and help address some of today's most challenging problems," Rattner added.
