Hours spent in traffic to get to a bank and then being faced with standing in long queues can all be something of the past.
Just ask Absa, which has been on a successful extensive campaign over the past few weeks bringing cellphone banking closer to its consumers.
This product awareness drive kick-started in early July at the Baragwanath taxi rank in Soweto and then moved on to the Absa Towers building in downtown CBD Johannesburg. At the end of July, the Absa team, kitted out in Absa cellphone banking gear, were signing up customers at the Jabulani Mall in Soweto.
Consumers have been responding positively to Absa staff who have been demonstrating, on hand, how convenient, quick and secure Absa cellphone banking is. This service enables you to bank wherever you are, anytime of the day, at home or when you are travelling in a taxi or commuting by train. Absa cellphone banking is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to buy prepaid airtime, make account payments, check bank balances, make transfers and get mini-statements on bank accounts.
All that's needed is an Absa bank account and a cellphone, and registration will take you only a few minutes. "Absa believes convenience and security are key customer requirements and we believe that Absa cellphone banking meets these needs," says Christo Vrey, Absa Group Digital Channels General Manager.
"With these awareness outreach programmes, we are able to meet our potential customers in their communities and explain to them the benefit they can gain from using Absa cellphone banking," adds Vrey. "During our previous awareness pilots at Baragwanath, we reached more than 3 000 people and registered close to 600 new Absa cellphone banking customers."
Mzansi and Sekulula account holders also have the full benefit of Absa cellphone banking. Cellphone banking allows Absa Mzansi and Sekulula clients to do balance enquiries, confirm deposits made into their accounts, make payments and transact safely without the need to travel to a branch. Research has shown that the majority of Mzansi and Sekulula clients make use of pre-paid cellphone services and the Absa cellphone service makes buying airtime more convenient and hassle-free.
SMS-based Absa cellphone banking uses SMSes as the communication method and is available on the MTN and Vodacom networks. To link up to the service, customers will need to install the SMS application on their SIM card by calling the dedicated Absa cellphone banking contact centre on 0860 111 123 or visiting www.absa.co.za. They then follow the step-by-step download instructions and the process only takes a few minutes.
Convenient Internet-based Absa cellphone banking is also available on all networks by using any WAP2.0-enabled handset, and is available on all the mobile networks in South Africa.
