Windows Phone 7 update on the way

Johannesburg, 13 Jan 2011

Microsoft SA has confirmed South African Windows Phone 7 users will get their software update at the same time as the rest of the world.

Nkosi Kumalo, marketing lead for Windows Phone 7, says the update will be made available “in the coming months”, but a confirmed date could not be given.

When Microsoft head Steve Ballmer took to the stage at CES earlier this month, he also declined to give a set date, saying only “it's coming soon”.

The update is anticipated by many users, as it will add the copy-and-paste functionality for text, which is not included in the current release. Microsoft also says it has upped speed and overall performance, and improved memory management.

Security fixes are also included in the update, and Microsoft has confirmed this will patch an exploit for the only unlock tool that has been developed (similar to a jailbreak for the iPhone).

Kumalo also detailed the update process. Users will get an over-the-air notification that an update is available. The notification will prompt them to connect their phone to a computer, where the update will be downloaded and applied through the Zune sync software.

Windows Phone 7 users can also expect to see more updates in the coming months.
