The transition to working from home is fundamentally changing the relationship between companies and their employees, according to Ian Jansen van Rensburg, a senior systems engineer at VMware.

A two-pronged strategy is required to deploy a mobile workforce successfully, he says. “IT departments should have an employee first approach, while implementing mobility solutions that are consumer simple, secure and cost effective.”

When companies build a digital workspace, they change the way end-user services are delivered. IT needs to give employees convenient, consistent access to work apps and services across all the devices they use, while maintaining IT control and data security, says Van Rensburg.

A digital workspace should enable employees to jump into workflows easily, regardless of the device type, OS, or  ownership. A better user experience means that users generate fewer helpdesk tickets, freeing up time for IT to work on bigger, more strategic projects, he says.

A good digital workspace also integrates with current IT infrastructure, reducing the amount of risk and change IT must manage as the organisation begins its digital workspace journey.

ITWeb has partnered with VMware on a Remote Work Survey to examines the current remote work landscape in South Africa and how companies are facing up to this new challenge.

The survey seeks to uncover, among other things:

  1. How well your organisation was prepared for workforce mobility before the coronavirus pandemic?
  2. Did you have a remote working policy in place?
  3. What have been the biggest challenges, and benefits, of enabling remote work?

We hope you’ll be able set aside a few minutes of your time to participate in the survey, and stand a chance to win a lucky draw prize – a shopping voucher worthy R3 000.

The detailed results of the survey, and the prize winner, will be published on ITWeb.
