Is your POPIA compliance superficial?

Johannesburg, 20 Jul 2021

On 1 July 2021, South African firms faced the end of a bygone era. With POPIA in full effect, penalties for breaches became imposable. Its implementation within a business can be onerous and demanding. However, the threat of fines up to R10 million or prison sentences up to 10 years keep companies trying, against the odds, to comply.

Often, companies start with the most obvious areas of compliance, like ensuring consent to direct marketing and public availability of their PAIA manual. But there is a lot more to POPIA than just this.

“A lot of times, we focus on the technical pieces of things, but the culture of risk management, risk assessment and security architecture is what is needed to defend and protect your data,” says Mo Cashman, a Principal Engineer at McAfee and one of the expert guests on our upcoming webinar.

Implementation of POPIA is comprehensive and spans multiple functional areas, from HR to finance and beyond. It is not merely a “front office” problem. Isolating the proper implementation of POPIA to one or two areas exposes a company to risk of penalty.

South African homegrown podcast-webinar brand, Table Manners for Robots, continues to expand in reach and audience across the continent and abroad. The brand promises free, valuable content by interviewing deep subject matter experts from around the world. For the next episode, they have successfully partnered with global security powerhouse, McAfee, to bring needed insight to local business leaders.

Two senior execs, Mo Cashman and Laurent Marechal, join the show’s host Kerushan Govender in a telling conversation that goes beyond the surface of POPIA compliance. Join the discussion by tuning in at 10am tomorrow, Wednesday, 21 July 2021.
