MachNation unveils 2018 IOT device management scorecard: Software AG's Cumulocity IoT named a leading vendor

MachNation cites Cumulocity IoT's excellence in device life cycle management, support for LWM2M, and powerful dashboarding.

Johannesburg, 14 Jun 2018

Software AG (Frankfurt TecDAX: SOW) today announced its Cumulocity IoT is rated a leading vendor among 17 global IOT vendors by IOT industry specialists and independent research firm, MachNation, in its 2018 IOT Device Management ScoreCard (June 2018).

Bernd Gross, Senior Vice-President, IOT and Cloud, Software AG, noted: "IOT device management is one of the most complex parts of an IOT architecture and equally a critically important component in IOT deployments. Cumulocity IoT is unique in that it provides enterprises with the ability to very quickly start limited scale, cloud-based IOT projects and, as their sophistication grows, be confident to build IOT platform and IOT services that will grow effortlessly with them. We are seeing several companies recognising this and consequently change their underlying IOT device management to Cumulocity IoT. Enterprises are able to develop and implement their IOT services at the optimal balance between risk and ambition, at their pace, at their choice."

Software AG's Cumulocity IoT device management is device agnostic and can be used by any business needing to connect gateway devices, machine assets, and edge platforms for smart device manufacturers, enterprises and telecom service providers. It can authenticate, provision, configure, monitor and maintain tens of millions of assets in order to manage their functional capabilities. Cumulocity IoT device management includes asset provisioning, firmware upgradability, security patching, and alerting and reporting on specific metrics associated with deployed IOT assets. Typical assets include IOT gateways, retrofitted and new industrial equipment, and other such devices.

According to the MachNation report: "Software AG has a particularly strong offering in the growing IOT device management ecosystem. MachNation believes this strength comes from its excellent device management capabilities; highly extensible device management dashboard capabilities and support for LWM2M."

Dima Tokar, Co-founder and Head of Research, MachNation, said: "Enterprises should evaluate their IOT device management software based on requirements across four categories: robust integration of myriad device types; excellence in life cycle management capabilities; a cogent and robust architecture and security model; and a forward-thinking business strategy. By leveraging these requirements, enterprises ensure they are selecting a best-in-class platform for management of requirements devices. By choosing the right, high-quality device management, enterprises position themselves for long-term success in their IOT solution deployments."

Device life cycle management

Software AG's Cumulocity IoT includes device onboarding and sun-setting, device maintenance, and remote diagnostics. In addition, Cumulocity provides at-scale management of assets through hierarchical multi-level, and dynamic rule-based groups and mass execution of device life cycle tasks and device commands. Connectivity management is also provided 'on-platform', as are a variety of effective device- and aggregate-level data monitoring and device status views. Cumulocity IoT also provides notifications and alerting with on-platform support for notification events and multi-level alarms.

With Cumulocity IoT's integration as a service capabilities, enterprises can easily move consumed data northbound into enterprise applications and systems. By offering a comprehensive suite of device management capabilities, enterprises can quickly and easily develop and deploy the plat-form with far fewer requirements for custom development and integration compared to less productised competitor offerings.

LWM2M support

Software AG's Cumulocity IoT includes LWM2M support alongside existing MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport), Modbus, OPC-UA (OPC Unified Architecture protocol), Profinet (Process Field Net), and other southbound device protocols, which enables businesses to support next-generation, standardised device management protocols without foregoing legacy compatibility. Through Cumulocity-provided interfaces, customers are able to integrate the LWM2M object model directly into the platform's existing data model.

By supporting a publicly available standard for device management and data consumption, Cumulocity IoT allows their customers to implement seamless, multi-vendor solutions while preventing vendor tie-in for both the IOT platform and connected IOT devices. Software AG's support of LWM2M enables fast device integration, better multi-vendor interoperability, and support for the wide variety of existing southbound device protocols currently available.

Powerful device management dashboards

Cumulocity IoT includes a highly extensible device management dashboard, which includes recent improvements to group dashboards and on-platform analytics. Providing both user- and developer-customisable moni-toring and alerting interfaces, Cumulocity IoT enables easy implementation of commonly used operational and monitoring views. The platform also provides the ability to create aggregated monitoring views for both dynamic and static device groups, enabling more efficient 'at-a-glance' monitoring of device status and underlying ingested data points.

In addition, Software AG includes all of the underlying code for out-of-the-box interfaces. This enables developers to rapidly customise their application for specific use-case requirements. This means businesses can focus on the deployment aspects of their deployment, thereby saving time and development resources that might otherwise be dedicated to the development of front-end interfaces.

Gross added: "We are thrilled with this most recent recognition of Cumulocity IoT's device management capabilities; since the inception of its report last year, MachNation has rated our Cumulocity IoT as a leader in device management. Cumulocity IoT provides an open and comprehensive device management solution that helps enterprises and service providers address the challenge of deploying, managing and analysing connected IOT assets, with no vendor lock-in. Our customers, including ADAMOS, Deutsche Telekom, Gardner Denver, Octo Telematics, Trackerando, NTT Communications, Siemens, and Unlimit by Reliance Group and many more, are fundamentally transforming the way individuals interact with the world around them."

The Cumulocity IoT platform operates across cloud, on-premises and edge, providing enterprises and service providers with total freedom and choice in designing, building, deploying and upgrading the enterprise IOT platform, solutions and services. It comprises a range of pre-packaged solutions such as Condition Monitoring, Predictive Maintenance and Track & Trace, as well as quick and easy device and sensor management, thus bringing the worlds of IT and operational technology (OT) together.
