Leading market research firm names Riverbed WAN application delivery market share leader for 2007

Johannesburg, 19 May 2008

Riverbed Technology, the technology and market leader in wide-area data services (WDS), has announced that a new report from IDC ranks Riverbed first in worldwide market share for the WAN application delivery market for the calendar year 2007.

According to the report, IDC's Worldwide WAN Application Delivery 2007 Vendor Shares: "Riverbed is on a roll. It has built a solid... solution that delivers the goods, and the product is striking the right chord with customers." In its report, IDC states: "The future is bright for WAN application delivery solutions. They have proven their merit and are more than just a quick fix to slow applications on the WAN. Other factors, such as the changing role of the branch and easy-to-prove ROI benefits, give this market room to grow."

"As WDS deployments have moved beyond the tactical to the strategic, the ability to deliver fast application performance to all employees, regardless of location or application, is critical," says Christo Briedenhann, country manager: South Africa, Riverbed. "The solution must be easy to install and manage and must scale to meet the needs of the data centre, remote offices and mobile workers. Riverbed is the only vendor to deliver solutions that meet all of these requirements."

According to IDC: "The branch is no longer viewed as a far-flung outpost but is being brought into the fold as a viable extension of the business." And Briedenhann notes that acceleration is the core requirement in the remote office: "Globalisation and regionalisation, combined with the increased pace of business, has led to an explosion of collaboration among distributed groups who, although they are hundreds or even thousands of miles apart, may be working on the same project. Enterprises are deploying WDS solutions to ensure their teams are productive and able to respond in real-time to customer and partner demands."

While WDS is highly valued, customer demand is fragmented among the array of other edge services desired. To address the need for additional services in the branch, Riverbed has developed the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP), an extensible data services platform that enables the delivery of virtualised edge services without the need to deploy additional physical servers at remote or branch offices. The RSP allows customers to deploy best-of-breed services from their choice of vendors on Steelhead appliances in a self-contained partition to minimise the hardware infrastructure footprint at the branch office. In a typical RSP deployment, companies can run "serverless" branch offices by simplifying IT infrastructure to include just a router and a Steelhead appliance.

Steelhead products

Riverbed WDS solutions enable organisations of all sizes to overcome a host of severe problems, including poor application performance and insufficient bandwidth at remote sites.

By speeding the performance of applications between data centres, remote offices and mobile workers by five to 50 times and in some cases up to 100 times, Riverbed's award-winning Steelhead WDS products enable companies to consolidate IT, improve backup and replication processes to ensure data integrity, and improve staff productivity and collaboration. Steelhead products have been deployed in organisations ranging from the world's largest corporations, with offices around the globe, to small companies with a couple of sites that are just miles apart.
