ISACA SA Chapter and PMSA build an alliance to benefit industry-related professions

Johannesburg, 24 Aug 2020

The Information Systems Audit and Control Association South Africa Chapter NPC (ISACA SA Chapter) is actively collaborating with professional bodies and like-minded organisations that foster common values and strive for similar outcomes to help realise the positive potential of technology. This has been achieved through memorandums of understanding (or MOUs) that outline initiatives and activities to engage and grow the skills base in South Africa in a spirit of collaboration.

The ISACA SA Chapter recently signed an MOU with the Project Management South Africa (PMSA). PMSA is the SAQA-recognised professional body representing the interests of project, programme and portfolio management practitioners in South Africa and southern Africa. PMSA creates an enabling environment for professional development through a variety of activities and resources. Both ISACA South Africa and PMSA are based on professional values and the development of professional competencies consisting of knowledge, skills and behaviours of their respective members.

The PMSA is recognised as a professional body by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) with registered professional designations; PM – Project Manager, Sr PM – Senior Project Manager; Pr PM – Professional Project Manager; and PM Admin – Project Management Administrator.

Within South Africa, the ISACA SA Chapter is actively pursuing an application to SAQA for recognition as a professional body in South Africa and registering formal designations, ISAP (SA) – Information Systems Audit Professional; and ISMS (SA) – Information Security Management Professional.

Through the MOU, both organisations mutually recognise each other’s professional designations and will work together to advance their respective professions in South Africa. Their membership will benefit from an extended community and they will enhance their member value propositions by allowing members to attend each other’s events, programmes, workshops, seminars and access to marketing material and/or articles of both organisations at the discounted member rate.

The negotiations were initiated by Nolan Nadesan, who is a member of both the PMSA; and member and director of the ISACA SA Chapter. Nadesan commented: “It has long been a desire of mine to see a partnership between two disciplines, IT governance and project management, which are vastly so different yet fundamentally pursue similar objectives. As a professional within both fields, I am certain our members will find this partnership both value-adding and eye-opening. All projects require solid governance, and all governance requires effective delivery.”

Arlene-Lynn Volmink (President, ISACA SA Chapter) added: “Project assurance is a personal passion, a field I practice in day-to-day and a field that I love. For IT-enabled projects, it is positioned at the intersection of information systems assurance advocated by ISACA and project management advocated by PMSA. I am excited about this partnership and the opportunities that lie ahead for the professional industry as a whole.”

Iqbal Sheik (Chairperson of PMSA Board of Directors) mentioned: “The vision of PMSA is to promote, foster and confer project management designations in South Africa. One of its core focus areas is to continuously add value to its membership and stakeholders. Having a collaborative relationship will hereby increase the value proposition for both PMSA and ISACA SA Chapter members. Being an experienced independent consultant, and a results driven project management professional (PMP), the project management profession is constantly evolving and project managers need to keep abreast of changes to project management tools, techniques and methodologies. Governance is the cornerstone for all project delivery and the exposure to ISACA will definitely sharpen project management skills. This is a momentous milestone for PMSA, and we are looking forward to working with Arlene-Lynn Volmink and her team.”
