SingTel sets sights on the cloud

Telecoms service provider Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) and virtualisation software maker VMware released SingTel PowerON Compute, enabled by VMware vCloud Datacentre Services, states CIOL.

SingTel claims this enterprise hybrid cloud computing solution can reduce operating costs by up to 73%.

The company says the service will enable companies to expand the resources of their private cloud infrastructure seamlessly into PowerON Compute's secure public cloud without the hassles of re-installing and re-configuring their software applications, reveals Today Online.

"This means customers can fully utilise current IT infrastructure investments, while benefiting from on-demand, pay-as-you-use, public cloud computing resources," said the telco in a statement.

Channel News Asia says SingTel has raised its forecast of cloud computing contribution to its revenue.

The telco now expects the segment to grow as much as 70% each year until 2014, instead of the previously estimated 50%.

This is on the back of a strong take-up rate for its services, and also as more companies think of business continuity measures in the wake of the massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
