KwaZulu-Natal's inaugural fourth industrial revolution (4IR) summit is under way, with government and key stakeholders discussing developing a comprehensive plan for the province to respond to the next industrial revolution.

The two-day 4IR summit was organised by the Moses Kotane Institute, a KZN provincial government entity responsible for research and innovation.

Sihle Zikalala, MEC for economic development in KZN, says the summit has attracted government, policymakers, the private sector and tertiary institutions.

"We have speakers from around the globe who will share their learning, expertise and unpack the opportunities and challenges that come with the fourth industrial revolution."

The fourth industrial revolution has become a key focus for local political leaders, including president Cyril Ramaphosa, who believe the country needs to combine resources and expertise to seize the opportunities brought on by Industry 4.0.

According to the Department of Communications, SA currently has different elements of 4IR spread across government, private sector and civil society, which have formed discourse across all these sectors.

The department notes there is currently no single plan or blueprint which brings together all key role players into a single focus.
