Can machine learning help make a perfect dating match?

Johannesburg, 12 May 2021

AI (artificial intelligence) has gone through a lot of changes in recent years, and it will surely dominate the future of technology for a long time. ML (machine learning) is only a small branch of AI, but it has also improved our lives tremendously and will continue to do so.

Machine learning is simply the technology used for providing systems with the possibility to automatically learn from experience and without the need to be explicitly programmed. The development of computer programs plays a huge role in machine learning, as it accesses data and further uses it to learn.

Machine learning helped the online dating industry

Online dating is something common nowadays, and it becomes more and more efficient thanks to machine learning. The process of matching with someone through a dating app becomes much more efficient with the developers applying machine learning to the algorithms.

AI considers someone’s past behaviour and preferences, as well as the in-app activity.

But can machine learning really help us find the perfect match on a dating app? Without wanting to offend anyone, we first have to consider that people, in general, are quite complicated.

Machine learning can surely make the perfect match, but there’s an ‘if’

You can rely on machine learning to grant you the perfect match on a dating app based on a simple condition: you have to be a steadfast person. You must not change your mind and preferences too often, and machine learning will surely do its thing in an ideal way.

But there’s another problem here: once again, without the desire to offend anyone, we are all well-aware that while using dating apps, a lot of people aren’t telling the truth about who they are and what they want. This fact also aligns with our ‘if’, as all the artificial intelligence in the world cannot read your mind and understand what you want if you express the opposite or you change your mind regularly. Technology has evolved so much that dating apps will easily offer the user the chance to connect with people with similar tastes, traits and interests.

If you’re looking to date only women who are fans of Michael Jackson and work as content writers, for instance, the dating apps will use AI to offer you that chance. If you’re looking to date vegan men who like movies from the '50s, dating apps won’t care that those people are so rare to find, and they will further grant you such a wish if you’re patient enough to keep swiping among the profiles. But it’s obvious that the same AI won’t work if the people using these dating apps aren’t honest about who they are and what they want.

Otherwise, dating apps are very efficient if you live in a small town or you simply want to have more options when it comes to dating. There’s a big world we live in, so why not search for your dream guy or dream girl abroad? Don’t you worry even for one moment that you won’t find enough people on dating apps! Whether you’re using Tinder, Badoo, Chatroulette, OkCupid, Bumble, Omegle or other apps, they are very popular. As of September 2019, Bumble reported over 5 million users only in the USA, making it the second most popular online dating app in that country after Tinder.

In recent years, dating apps have even begun to implement the possibility of looking for a life partner by the sexual orientation criterion. It doesn’t matter if you’re straight or from the LGBT group, as dating apps can now put you in contact with a person of the same sexual orientation fast.
