HP debuts cartridge authentication software

Tech giant HP is debuting toner cartridge authentication software in the face of increasing counterfeiting both globally and in the EMEA region, reveals ITP.net.

“I am proud to announce a new software which makes it possible for all users of HP supplies to make sure it is a real product, not a counterfeit, not only manually but via a server and via authentication,” said Andrea Gebhard of HP's LaserJet Supplies, Imaging and Printing Group, MEMA.

The software can be downloaded from HP for LaserJet printers; Inkjet printers already have the software embedded within the firmware.

The Criminal Evidence and Criminology Department of Dubai Police has dealt with 198 cases of commercial counterfeiting during the first four months of this year, experts revealed on Monday, notes Gulf Today.

“Most of these cases are related to counterfeit spare parts, which have led to an increase in traffic accidents. In 2010, the commercial counterfeit cases reached 400 out of which seven were related to drugs,” expert examiner of fraud and forgery, Fayez Abdel Moneim Ibrahim says.

“Commercial fraud and imitation of trademarks and intellectual property rights are some of the most common cases that we receive. Counterfeit auto parts are imitated the most in such cases. They resemble the original ones, even the small parts,” he says.
