The site sends out a security alert showing it might have been compromised.

Attempts to access the City of Johannesburg's (COJ's) Web site proved futile this morning as the site brought up a security risk alert.

Several ITWeb employees attempted to access the COJ Web site via the Google Chrome browser, but clicking through to the site results in similar security messages.

One message reads: "The site ahead contains malware. Attackers currently on www.joburg.org.za might attempt to install dangerous programs on your computer that steal or delete your information (for example photos, passwords, messages and credit cards)."

In addition, a search of the Web site name on Chrome brings up another warning: "This site may harm your computer."

The COJ would not confirm whether its site had been compromised, but simply stated it is offline.

Responding via Twitter, the city says: "[The] Web site is currently offline; our apologies for any inconvenience."

The COJ has not provided further information on what has caused the outage or when the site will be back to functional form.
