Garmin Southern Africa has partnered with MyFitnessPal, a calorie counting platform which is available free of charge through the Web or a downloadable application.

MyFitnessPal App displays a daily calorie consumption goal which users will need to follow in order to achieve their desired weight, whether it is to maintain, lose or increase their overall measurements.

When users link their Garmin Connect profile to MyFitnessPal, exercise sessions using V'ivofit or Forerunner 15 will sync and be viewed as calories burnt on the MyFitnessPal platform. This will benefit users and assist them in managing their goal weights, encourage them to stay active and eat more healthily.

"Garmin's range of wearable fitness watches have assisted individuals in reaching their health goals for 10 years and Garmin believes the partnership with MyFitnessPal will complete the health experience for users," says Marc Bainbridge, fitness product manager at Garmin Southern Africa.

"Users will be able to track their consumed calories through the largest food and nutrition database in the world and directly compare it in Garmin Connect with their calories burned in workouts and their steps taken throughout the day on their Garmin device."

"We are thrilled to be partnering with a global leader in GPS technology to help our users accurately track their fitness footprint," says Mike Lee the co-founder and CEO of MyFitnessPal.

"The integration of Garmin activity data with MyFitnessPal nutrition data will enhance the overall insight available to both companies. We can only benefit from learning new insights of the evolving end-users, their daily activities and how this relates to their overall health goals."

Once users' MyFitnessPal accounts are linked in Garmin Connect, users can view the number of calories consumed on a widget on the Garmin Connect homepage. These will be calculated and logged in users' MyFitnessPal accounts. The Calories In/Out feature will compare the calories that have been consumed against the calories burned (as measured by V'ivofit and Forerunner 15 devices) to show the user the net calorie balance for the day.

Garmin units compatible with MyFitnessPal are the V'ivofit and Forerunner 15. The V'ivofit is a daily activity tracker with a battery life of over one year and greets users with a personalised daily goal.

V'ivofit has a display that will show steps taken, distance in kilometres, goal countdown, calories burned and even date and time. Forerunner 15 is a GPS running watch with daily activity tracking built in. It is also a GPS-enabled sports watch that is compatible with a heart rate monitor and tracks distance, pace and calories, says Garmin.
