Accurate and up-to-date consumer data remains an area of focus for the telecoms and public sector markets in SA, says TransUnion's Thato Matsipe.

Credit and information management solutions provider TransUnion has appointed Thato Matsipe into the newly created position of public sector business executive head for South Africa.

Matsipe says he will focus on planning, controlling and managing the achievement of sales revenue and profitability of the public sector and telco vertical within TransUnion SA.

He will also lead the national sales team and act as a go-between with the product and analytics teams to design and develop solutions that meet the strategic risk and information management needs of the public sector and telco marketplace respectively.

Matsipe's immediate goal is to build a strategic vision for both public sector and telecommunications industry and focus on enhancing customer service and strategic relationship management.

"I am in the process of amassing a full dedicated public sector and telecoms national sales team. Over the past couple of weeks we have appointed a full public sector team and built our three to five years public sector plan."

"We have just concluded appointments in the telecoms vertical and will be reviewing and developing the strategic plan in this market."

Matsipe's focus for the telecoms division is to enable business revenue growth by going into new markets and building long-term relationships with TransUnion's customers.

He believes TransUnion will have to focus on understanding its customer's needs, increase its focus on customer retention while driving growth into high potential and untapped opportunities within public sector and telecoms respectively.

Grant Phillips, CEO at TransUnion African regions, says Matsipe will specifically be focusing on the management of two markets in the division with a big focus on the public sector market, including provincial and local government as well as stakeholder entities.

"His extensive experience and knowledge is a valuable contribution to our team and our clients. He will be a critical team member in helping TransUnion build strategic partnerships and he will also help us focus on productivity sharing and organisational transformation."

"The concept of 'information for good' is very relevant in my new position," says Matsipe.

Accurate and up-to-date consumer data remains an area of focus for the telecoms and public sector markets in SA, he adds. Incorrect information leads to misinformed business decisions, inappropriate budget allocations and inability to curb fraud and misuse of relevant budgets, Matsipe explains.

"When partnering with the public sector, I believe we will be able to assist these departments with their challenges while improving the lives of all South Africans."

Matsipe has in excess of 10 years' experience on senior government, state-owned entities, policies and stakeholder management matters across the African region, says TransUnion.

He holds a programming diploma, ITIL certification, management advancement program qualification and is currently studying towards a BCom degree.
