Endpoint security a must for SMEs

As cyber crime gets increasingly sophisticated, organisations of all sizes need to realise the threat and prioritise endpoint security.

This is according to Tich Mugwara, Symantec security product specialist at Drive Control Corporation. However, he says SMEs cannot afford costly and sophisticated endpoint technology, yet they face the same risks as their corporate counterparts.

“Fortunately, vendors are beginning to address this under-served segment and we are seeing endpoint solutions becoming available to the SME market at an appropriate price point,” notes Mugwara. “This enables both small and larger enterprises to secure their infrastructure against multi-layered security risks and business interruptions.”

A recent report by Frost & Sullivan emphasises that organisations must upscale their security services and embrace endpoint security. The report reveals that no single technology can successfully serve to safeguard the network from the multi-dimensional nature of the menace of cyber crime.

The primary focus of vendors is on offering endpoint solutions that accommodate greater functionality and diversity than previously available. “Tailored to small and enterprise segments respectively, the small business endpoint solution, for example, should mitigate the results of malware and spam threats,” notes Mugwara.

“It is important for SMEs to look for an all-inclusive suite that provides complete protection, creating a secure environment where computer system failures, malware, and spam risks are identified and addressed immediately.”

From a corporate perspective, he continues, an endpoint solution should adhere to the multi-layered security needs of enterprises and include messaging security and system recovery functionality. This in turn reduces the cost of securing environments and effectively manages the inherent risks of today's IT infrastructures.

“Ultimately, multiple layers of protection will ensure risks are accurately identified and addressed across all platforms,” concludes Mugwara.
