Avoid getting hacked

Johannesburg, 30 Nov 2016

In terms of business and home Internet security: 37 000 Web sites get hacked daily. What this means for an average Internet user browsing a Web site that was previously hacked that doesn't have Internet security or an antivirus installed, is that your information or device can be compromised.

The current trend for compromised devices is "Ransomware" This is when your device gets infected by malicious software designed to block the access to your computer, until an amount of money, ransom, is paid to the person that wrote the malicious software. In the majority of cases, even if you pay the ransom, you will not get your data back. It is advisable to refrain from paying any ransom for your data.

In order to protect yourself against cyber-attacks, ransomware, or viruses you need to have a firewall and antivirus on your device or network.

People need to be aware that you can easily be hacked at a public Internet WiFi hotspot, never connect on a public network if you don't have antivirus or Internet security. Some hotspot providers try to have security on the WiFi hotspot network, but not all do.

Henk Olivier, MD of Ozone IT, was recently a victim of a hacked attempt at a WiFi hotspot at a restaurant. Luckily he had a separate firewall and antivirus on his computer which notified him of the attempt. He could see it was a local IP address, meaning that it was a person connected to the same WiFi hotspot at that time. There were so many people with laptops it would have been challenging to determine who the actual person was. Olivier did report it to the WiFi hotspot provider and they blocked the MAC address of the person to avoid them connecting to that specific hotspot again. The WiFi hotspot provider is then able to start tracking when that specific device connects to that hotspot again and possible action can be taking against such an individual.

With the education system changing to become an online environment, children, tweens and teens are spending an increased amount of time online. This comes with added risk and exposure to cyberbullying and witnessing inappropriate content. Understanding what children do online and the risks they face will help you keep your child safe. It is imperative for parents to start controlling and protecting their children from unauthorised Internet surfing.

In a business environment you are able to control the Web sites your staff visit and the times they are allowed to access social media sites; such as lunch times, before and after work, by using Kerio Control Software, provided by Ozone IT. The software also allows you, the business owner, the capabilities of being able to pin point the exact person that is attempting to download illegal movies.
