The City of Ekurhuleni is offering young people free digital development training.

For eight weeks, the City of Ekurhuleni will provide free training to enable young people to write and create mobile applications, games and Web sites.

In a statement, the city says registration is open to all young people between the ages of seven and 21.

The 'learnerthon' programme will provide candidates with skills on computer basics, digital literacy, creative coding, app development and gamification, according to the statement.

"This will empower young people with free coding skills to inspire them to pursue careers in the ICT space and spark their creative side."

Learners will be expected to work in groups to decide on a project towards the end of the course and develop it from start to finish with the support of their mentors.

An 80% pass rate on the digital literacy course is a prerequisite for learners to progress to the next course.

The statement notes: "Post the learnerthon programme, learners have an option to pursue a six-week course on computer analytics also offered free at Ekurhuleni libraries."
