The Airports Company SA (ACSA) has appointed Sello Mmakau as its new chief CIO - a newly created role for the company, following its leadership realignment earlier this year.

Mmakau joins from the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), where he also worked as CIO. Speaking on the new appointment, ACSA CEO Bongani Maseko highlighted the CIO's importance, adding the role will "ensure the information technology strategy is ideally aligned to sustainably support the growing organisation".

"His position plugs into ACSA's plans to conclude the filling of positions at executive level during the current financial year," Maseko said.

In a statement released today, ACSA said Mmakau's time at the DHA established him as a figure "instrumental in improving the department's back-end systems performance, enabling it to better deliver on its mandate to the public and enhance its reputation".

"During his almost six years at home affairs, he was also involved in collaborating with the banking industry to develop automated online fingerprint verification, and implemented the new South African smart ID card.

"The SA smart ID card won Regional ID Document of the Year Award 2013 at an annual high security printing conference held in Asia."

Mmakau holds a BA degree, a Master of Business Leadership degree and several IT-related qualifications, and he has also worked at the Department of Health, the State Information Technology Agency and Sasol.

He was selected as the Visionary CIO of 2012 by the IITPSA, Gartner, ITWeb and the Gordon Institute of Business Science.
