Team Opulence beat 18 other teams to claim victory at the MWEB GameZone Master Series Call of Duty Ghosts Cape Town LAN tournament recently hosted at the MWEB head office in Cape Town.

Team Opulence and Team Adept faced off in the final round of an MWEB GameZone Master Series tournament with Team Opulence coming out ahead on both occasions. In the past, Team Adept has been the team to beat, but now it seems that Team Opulence has taken that mantle.

Desmond Kurz, gaming and digital manager at MWEB, believes competitions such as this are essential for the development of gaming as a recognised sport in SA, which, by international standards, is an exciting emerging gaming nation.

"We need to develop young talent, not only to build up a base of South African professionals who are able to compete against the world's best gamers in international competitions, but also to get gaming recognised as sport in South Africa with significant benefits - to the economy as a whole, and for our children's cognitive development and problem-solving skills."

Kurz said MWEB hosted the Cape Town LAN as part of a series of competitions for the Call of Duty console community in SA, called the MWEB GameZone Master Series. "We're passionate about assisting the Call of Duty console community to hone their competitive skills as they have the ability to compete overseas in the prestigious Call of Duty Championships in Los Angeles and put South African gaming firmly on the map among some of the world's top players."

He adds further that gamers put in many hours of practice and show a level of dedication that should be promoted.

"From a pure connectivity perspective, these gamers demand the best online connectivity to remain competitive online, so they are our Formula 1 drivers essentially, who help us to ensure the best possible online experience that leads to better connectivity for the average user at home in the same way that F1 pushes the boundaries of motor vehicles."

The MWEB GameZone Master Series for Call of Duty continues in May, with online registration for the 1v1 eSniper online tournament still open. Click on the full programme here.
