Cape Town-based outsourcing specialist Sigma has opened a new multimillion-rand contact centre in the city, housing 500 jobs.

Sigma, which offers call centre services to the energy, utilities and financial services sectors, unveiled the modern offices in a three-storey converted factory building in Diep River.

In a statement, the company says the Diep River contact centre will house 500 employees, with Sigma promising more jobs as it grows and explores opportunities in SA and abroad.

The growing business process outsourcing (BPO) sector in Cape Town has attracted R3.4 billion worth of investments over the last three years, fuelling economic growth and employment in the city.

Government has since pegged the BPO sector as one of the green shoots that will steer economic reconstruction and recovery in the country.

Sigma, a subsidiary of Johannesburg-headquartered Digicall, currently employs 1 200 employees at its contact centre facilities in Cape Town.

“We have seen a superb period of growth over several years now, but we needed a new facility which also gave us space to expand further. We are moving 500 employees into what is our third office in the Cape Town area, but that number will be boosted further as we win more contracts,” says Sigma chief executive Gary Gilburd.

“We hope to add hundreds more jobs in the next 12 months, as people look to us to manage their contact centre operations. Overall, the opening of our second site in Diep River is great news. Not only are we promising more jobs and opportunities, but our investment has converted a former factory building into a stunning, modern office complex which is fit for the future. It’s another milestone in our history here in South Africa.”

Sigma was founded in 2011 by Gilburd and chief operating officer Mike Harfield, before it was acquired by Digicall in 2016. It has gone on to employ a workforce of 3 000 people in contact centres in Birmingham, UK and in Cape Town.
