E-mail and data security company Mimecast has introduced an early adopter programme for its new Web security service.

This after the company conducted a private beta for the new domain name system (DNS) security gateway solution.

According to the company, Mimecast DNS Security Gateway guards against malicious activity initiated by user action or malware, while blocking access to Web sites deemed unsafe or inappropriate based on each organisation's objectives and policies.

The programme is open to existing Mimecast customers looking to improve their defences against Web-based attacks, it notes.

Backed by a cloud platform in use at over 30 000 businesses globally, the Mimecast DNS Security Gateway leverages Mimecast's operating system, Mime|OS, which delivers a portfolio of cloud-based security services to businesses, says the security company.

Combining Mimecast's e-mail and the new Web security services enables organisations to implement an agile, easy-to-deploy solution that protects against the two most prevalent cyber attack vectors: e-mail and Web, says Mimecast.

"The feedback from early adopter customers has been overwhelmingly positive and we're eager to open the beta programme more broadly before the product is generally available," says Christina Van Houten, chief strategy officer at Mimecast.

Matthew Gardiner, director of product marketing for Mimecast, says the this service enables customers to broaden their protection from attacks over e-mail and the Web using a single integrated cloud-based solution.

The DNS Security Gateway service works by allowing or blocking access to Web sites by providing a DNS resolver service and applying an organisation's specific security policies to each DNS request from that organisation, says Gardiner.

The service also reports information like the top 10 most visited domains, Web site categories and blocked domains, to enable improved usage understanding and for conducting forensic investigations of incidents or breaches, he adds.

"We have seen a huge increase in cyber attacks in SA, with a number of high-profile organisations falling victim to cyber crime in recent months. While e-mail is the number one attack vector, criminals are increasingly targeting other business-critical applications and services as part of the attack.

"After e-mail, the most prominent attack vector is the Web, to infect, spread and exfiltrate data from organisations. In fact, attackers often use e-mail and Web together to execute an entire attack. The release of this service enables customers to broaden their protection from attacks over e-mail and the Web using a single integrated solution."
