Google will stop support for desktop Drive in March.

Google will shut down Google Drive in March and has urged users to move files to its new Drive File Stream product.

Drive File Stream, available today, is a desktop application that allows users to quickly access all of their Google Drive files on demand, directly from their computer. The company says this means almost none of the PC's hard drive space is used and less time is spent waiting for files to sync.

Google launched Google Drive in 2012 as its answer to cloud storage service Dropbox.

The company says in a blog post that with the launch of Drive File Stream: "Google Drive for Mac/PC is officially deprecated. It will no longer be supported starting on 11 December 2017 and it will shut down completely on 12 March 2018.

"We encourage you to use Drive File Stream. As an alternative to or in addition to installing Drive File Stream, you can upgrade to the new version of Drive for Mac/PC, called Backup and Sync."

Google Drive will still be available as an app on mobile operating systems.

The company notes that in October, Drive for Mac/PC users may start seeing messages in the product notifying them that Drive for Mac/PC is going away.

For organisations that use Google Drive as their cloud storage facility for employee documents, and other uses, Google has a help centre that will walk admins step-by-step through the various processes.

Drive File Stream will be rolled out from today and should be available to all users within the next few weeks.
