Comcast Corporation has become the first service provider in the world to achieve CE 2.0 certification status. This positions the company well, as analysts predict a $48 billion Carrier Ethernet services market by 2015.

The news of the first certified CE 2.0 service provider follows the January announcement of the first 20 equipment vendors certified for CE 2.0. The news also comes as Comcast's shares rose on the back of news that it is looking to buy General Electric's 49% stake in NBCUniversal. The brand is responsible for broadcasting 3D coverage of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, which was held in SA, via ESPN 3D.

Fiercetelecom reports the certification will allow the cable operator to better service its SME clients, as well as its medium-sized business clients that require Ethernet connectivity at multiple sites.

According to Nan Chen, president of Carrier Ethernet services forum MEF, the certification is a milestone for the Carrier Ethernet industry. "We are very pleased to see that Comcast has achieved the latest milestone in our industry - becoming the first CE 2.0 service provider," Chen said.

In recent years, the MEF has developed standards to make Carrier Ethernet more interconnected and controllable. According to the MEF, this all comes together under Carrier Ethernet 2.0. CE 2.0 boasts multiple classes of service and greater manageability, which makes it easier for a large number of access providers to join the Carrier Ethernet community and establish Carrier Ethernet as a business-class cloud service carrier.

According to the MEF, CE 2.0 builds on top of CE 1.0 and addresses market trends by providing a common language and set of standards to help the industry roll out the new generation of Ethernet services.
