Visa Checkout saves payment information so customers don't have to fill out forms every time they make a purchase.

Visa says over 100 local companies are using its digital checkout service, Visa Checkout, which was introduced in the market late last year.

The global payments technology company says Aramex Global Shopper, Discovery, Emirates Airline, TicketPro, WebTickets and YuppieChef are among the first wave of South African online retailers that have joined Visa Checkout.

The service stores credit and debit card information so customers don't have to fill out tedious payment forms every time they make a purchase.

It can be used from any device connected to the customer. Visa's data shows that 45% of consumers purchasing with Visa Checkout have done so from a mobile phone.

Credit cards do not have to be Visa-affiliated to be stored on the service. Other information stored includes name, delivery preferences and the billing address.

"There are more than 250 000 merchants and more than 15 million registered users globally, and we believe Visa Checkout will prove to be another success in South Africa," says Geraldine Mitchley, head of emerging products and innovation for Visa in Sub Saharan Africa.

"As we partner with a number of forward thinking merchants in market, we hope that more and more merchants, bank card issuers and consumers will see the benefits of this seamless and secure experience while shopping in-app or online."

Yuppie Chef's CIO Steve Porter says: "Visa Checkout has helped reduce friction at checkout and has had a significant impact on average basket size."
