Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services (DTPS) deputy minister Hlengiwe Mkhize has handed over a computer laboratory to Mathole Secondary School in the Mahlabathini area in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

A DTPS statement says the lab is equipped with 26 tablets, two laptops, a printer, a smart board and a server, and Vodacom will provide WiFi coverage for the whole school.

Handing over the computer lab is in line with the department's mandate to roll out broadband to the most rural and poorest areas in the country, according to the statement.

The DTPS says since the roll out of broadband, 11 528 schools have been connected. Of these schools, 3 793 are located in rural areas.

"One of the critical objectives is to ensure learners in rural areas are given ICT training and skills while still in school and also creating awareness on how to use technology for economic inclusion which can include marketing their products online," notes Mkhize.

Mkhize encouraged young people to get involved in skills development programmes through state-owned entities such MICT Seta and Nemisa. She emphasised the importance of supporting girl children to take maths and science subjects which will prepare them for careers in IT, science and manufacturing.

The deputy minister noted the need for the community, particularly the youth, to be e-astute so they benefit from the broadband rollout.
