A great first year for Hewlett-Packard in South Africa

Johannesburg, 11 Feb 1999

One year after re-establishing itself in South Africa, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Accounts Organisation has had a year of phenomenal success.

In November 1997 Hewlett-Packard re-established itself in South Africa through the acquisition of part of local company HiPerformance Systems, the then HP distributor for the area. A year later, the new HP Enterprise Accounts Organisation has achieved almost twice the performance targets set for the team and at the same time successfully tackled the challenges of integrating itself into the worldwide HP organisation.

"We know that the challenges involved in integrating a non-HP company, such as HiPerformance Systems, into the HP way are huge from a people, process and culture point of view. I have to take my hat off to our new South African team. Not only have the team members handled the matters relating to integration extremely efficiently, but they have also substantially exceeded every business target set for them," says Peter Testen, director for sales and marketing for HP`s International Sales.

"A year ago, after the acquisition, we were the leader in South Africa for successfully supplying and implementing enterprise resource planning systems such as SAP, Baan and Oracle. Today, not only have we built upon that leadership position, but we have also built a reputation for being a leading supplier of IT business support in the telecommunications, financial services, utilities and government sectors," adds Testen.

"South Africa is an extremely important market for Hewlett-Packard. Since the investment a year ago we have grown the organisation and plan to continue to do so over the coming year," he says.

However, Hewlett-Packard`s South African country GM and Enterprise Accounts Organisation GM, Lynne Ogilvy, has sadly decided that it time for her to leave HP and pursue interests elsewhere.

"The past year has been both demanding and extremely rewarding for me in achieving the organisational and business goals necessary. Without the unyielding support of everyone in both the local and global HP organisation, the success we have seen over the past 12 months would not have been possible," she says.

Ogilvy was appointed GM for Hewlett-Packard South Africa on 1 February 1998. She was previously HP enterprise accounts manager and GM of the Computer Systems Organisation within HiPerformance Systems. She also held a variety of senior management positions with HP in South Africa prior to HP`s disinvestment in 1989.

Hewlett-Packard is a leading global provider of computing, Internet and intranet solutions, services, communications products and measurement solutions, all of which are recognised for excellence in quality and support. HP has 124 600 employees and reported revenue of $47.1 billion in its 1998 fiscal year.
