MTN unveils uncapped FTTH offerings
MTN will launch new uncapped fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) products on 3 September, under its subsidiary Supersonic.
Supersonic, which is a rebranding of SmartVillage bought from MultiChoice in 2015, operates as an independently run company within MTN. Supersonic has its own executive team and employs 120 people, of which 25 are fully trained technicians.
Supersonic CEO Calvin Collett says the company wants to differentiate itself from the 47 Internet service providers (ISPs) already in the local market by delivering the best customer service and having a product that is easy to set-up.
"Complaints of too much complexity, network instability and poor after-sales services continue to plague the fibre industry and we aim to change that," says Collett.
The sign-up process is done online in five steps and followed by the guarantee of a call-back in under 30 minutes, says Supersonic, which also promises the entire installation and full configuration will happen within four to 14 days.
The company's focus is on consumers this year and next year it will make a wholesale offering available to businesses.
"We are focusing on the main metros first but will be expanding this further and where we can't deliver a service, we will assist in providing access to MTN's fixed-line LTE service," says Collett.
Pricing for uncapped FTTH products starts at R658 per month.
"In our view, fibre should not have any limitation in terms of capacity, so our solution is uncapped with no shaping. We believe our solution will ensure more people can benefit and we plan to become the number one ISP in the country in five years," says Collett.
Supersonic has an initial target of connecting 25% of the fibre market, which comprises 800 000 homes but is projected to pass as many as 2.2 million by 2022.
