DevOps: Turning the focus from tools to people

Learn how to adopt a DevOps mindset at the ITWeb Cloud, Data Centre & DevOps Summit, by Kirsten Doyle

Johannesburg, 11 Dec 2019

Organisations that are adopting DevOps practices are getting more done, and faster.

DevOps is about collaboration and continuous software delivery, and with one team, made up of cross-functional individuals all working together, DevOps organisations are delivering quality products, more quickly, with improved functionality and innovation, and with less complexity.

However, companies are still assuming that DevOps is about tooling and that it is a specialisation domain, says Freddy Mahhumane, head Of DevOps at Absa.

Mahhumane will be presenting on ‘DevOps: The infinite mindset’, at the ITWeb Cloud, Data Centre & DevOps Summit, to be held on 11 February at The Forum in Bryanston.

ITWeb Cloud, Data Centre & DevOps 2020

Register for free for this inaugural, one-day event, to be held on 11 February at The Forum in Bryanston. Themed ‘Setting future innovation in motion,’ the even will give you the opportunity to network with your peers, listen to industry experts and learn how to gain maximum benefit from yourcloud, datacentre and DevOps investments.

According to him, DevOps is a practice, and with this understanding, organisations need to start hiring practitioners and not engineers, by not only focusing on the craft, but on personality too.

"The best conceptions of DevOps are about people. So business needs to turn the focus from tools to people," he says.

There are several steps to building a good DevOps team, he says.

Firstly, a team needs to be built with customer-centricity in mind; then the organisation needs to create an environment for learning; and finally, the team must be allowed to be innovative and letting them know it's ok to be wrong if they learn from it.

DevOps teams need good leaders who understand the business culture and are able to personalise it. “Do not implement 'copy and paste DevOps models' from other organisations. Make sure you build with a succession plan in mind because you will need to lift as you rise,” he explains.

Delegates attending Mahhumane’s talk will learn how to adopt the right DevOps mindset  and create a DevOps culture that will complement the business strategy.
