The Be Safe functionality on the Santam app allows users to let friends and family track users' journeys.

The Santam App now has a function called Be Safe, launched this week, that lets friends or family keep track of users' trips and lets them know if they have arrived safely.

The user first selects how they are getting to their destination: driving, cycling, walking or running. Then they enter the start and end destination, with an estimated time of arrival. Then, users can choose multiple "guardians", who will receive notifications when they start their journey, if there are any delays and when the arrival point is reached, and the "guardians" can also follow the trip's progress live on a map.

Nathan van Rooyen, Santam's head of digital marketing, says: "It can give both you and your friends and family immense peace of mind knowing you can be assisted if necessary while on the road.

"The app can also be used in a variety of other situations - to keep an eye on you when you are out and about, enjoying your favourite form of exercise, or are on neighbourhood watch. You can also keep track of your children, whether they've gone camping or are on a road trip to the matric rage."

The app also has an accident and incident reporter feature that guides the user through a process to report, document and submit an accident or incident report directly to their insurer, even if they are not covered by Santam. This works by scanning the barcode of vehicle licence discs, recording audio statements, taking photos of the scene and finding the nearest police station.

"When you are involved in an accident, you may be too flustered to remember all the information that will be required by your insurer," says Van Rooyen.

The app is available for free download to both Android and iPhone devices, and the Be Safe and accident reporter functionality are also available to those who are not Santam clients.
