Science and technology minister Naledi Pandor will receive an honorary doctorate from NOVA University in Lisbon.

In a statement, the Department of Science and Technology says the degree is in recognition of the role the minister plays in the promotion of science, not only in Africa, but globally.

According to the department, the rector of NOVA University said Pandor received the unanimous favourable vote of the university's Council of Deans.

The university will confer the degree on her on 14 July at the rectory of NOVA University.

Pandor has expressed gratitude for the recognition, the statement notes.

The university's honour is another accolade recognising Pandor's efforts in promoting science, her advocacy for young and women scientists, and initiatives that promote collaboration regionally and with other countries.

Earlier this year, the minister was awarded the 2016 Award for Science Diplomacy by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
